DATE: Saturday, 24 November, 2007.
From the center of Castellón we head southward, direction
Plana Baja, a comarca of the Comunidad Valenciana situated at the south coast of the Castellón province. Its traditional capital is
Burriana, but actually the municipality where most people live nowadays is Villarreal.
The idea is to approach the local/regional culture of the comarca from an anthropological and (agri-)cultural perspective.
We will first pass through a part of
Almazora (Plana Alta) at the south of Castellón. You will already see the
orchards of oranges and clementines. Later we learn about the traditional system of irrigation. We’ll pass by some hermitages and old lanes and visit an orchard where an expert will explain us more about citriculture (if we are lucky there is recollection of fruits). Afterwards we will visit a
confection warehouse and have a guided tour to see the how the citrics are packaged.
If we have enough time we will visit the village of
Alquerías del Niño Perdido and the capital of the comarca la Plana Baja
Burriana (optional). The
Museum of the Orange in Burriana is closed at the moment; if the works finish until the day of the excursion we will visit the museum and have a guided tour.
We hoped that it is of your interest!
